Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa is an iwi (tribal) authority representing around 15,000 descendants of Ngāti Awa.  The rohe (tribal area) of Ngāti Awa is located in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Aotearoa/New Zealand.  The Rūnanga has responsibility for progressing the economic, cultural, social, political and environmental interests of Ngāti Awa.  The Rūnanga was established in its current form in 2005 at the completion of the Ngāti Awa Treaty settlement with the Crown which settled long standing grievances arising out of the land confiscations during the 1800s.

The Ngāti Awa Vision

Ngāti Awa te toki te tangatanga i te rā, te ngohengohe i te wai.
Ngāti Awa the adze whose bindings will not be loosened in the sun or be softened by the rain.

This whakatauki (proverb) likens Ngāti Awa to the adze.  The iwi has taken this saying as the theme for its Vision 2050.  The aspirations within the Vision have been compiled from the thoughts of Ngāti Awa rangatahi (youth), pakeke (adults) and kaumätua (elderly). The Vision provides the guidance for the Rūnanga and all Ngāti Awa for the next generation.

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was opened in 1992 and officially became a wānanga in 1997. Awanuiārangi is one of only three institutions designated as wānanga under the Education Act 1989.

The name Awanuiārangi is linked to the whakapapa (genealogy) of the Mataatua canoe, which landed at Whakatāne. Many tribal groups claim descent from the Mataatua canoe and the ancestor Awanuiārangi. Among them are Te Whanau-ā-Apanui, Whakatōhea, Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Whare.

Although Awanuiārangi has strong links to the people of Mataatua, its doors of learning have always been open to all iwi and all New Zealanders.

Awanuiārangi also recognises that our aspirations are linked to and expressed by other indigenous people throughout the world. We acknowledge a common experience for tangata whenua and indigenous people everywhere.

Since it's inception, Awanuiārangi has always been mindful of its mission -

"Rukuhia te mātauranga ki tōna hōhonutanga me tōna whānuitanga"

"To pursue knowledge to its greatest depths and broadest horizons"
